Republicans on abortion

The Republican Party has led the fight to restrict abortion access through the U.S. court system and state legislatures. In Pennsylvania, our state legislature has been Republican-held and dominated for decades with Democrats in the governing minority. If Pennsylvanians elect a Republican to the governor’s seat, after ten years of Democratic Governor Tom Wolf vetoing anti-choice legislation, Doug Mastriano may lead the fight against reproductive healthcare.

Doug Mastriano, Republican Nominee for Governor

  • Promised to use executive actions to restrict abortion and push for legislative reinforcements: “So on day one, I have a series of executive orders, and just for everyone's comfort out there, executive orders are powers that a governor can wield. But you obviously want to back up the legislation. So they’re codified in the law. So after my eight years are up, the next governor can't overturn them.” [Doug Mastriano, Southern York Meet and Greet, PA, 5/3/22]

  • Touts his extreme views:

    • “I'm the most pro-life guy out there.” [Bannon’s Pandemic War Room, 5/3/22].

    • “And everyone knows where I stand on it, very clear. Life starts at conception.” [Doug Mastriano, Facebook Live, PA, 05/03/22].

  • Wants a total abortion ban, without exceptions:

Mehmet Oz, PA’s Republican Senate Nominee

Mehmet Oz

  • Supports the Supreme Court ending Roe: When asked on the Chris Stigall radio “ if the Supreme Court ultimately rules to gut what would be Roe v Wade as we know it, which is considered sort of the established abortion law of the land, if this current Supreme Court undoes that, you would support that” Oz responded saying “Very much so.” ” [Chris Stigall, 3/1/22]

  • Is against federal legislation to protect abortion rights nationwide: “I’m glad to see the Senate defeat this legislation (the Women’s Health Protection Act). As PA's next senator, I will always fight to protect the innocent and defend the dignity of life.”

  • Believes that life begins at conception: “I’m strongly pro-life believe. I believe life begins at conception” [WHP-AM, 1/24/22]
