Penn Dems Statement on Roe v. Wade, June 24

Today is a dark day in American history. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is devastating.

Americans overwhelmingly agree that decisions about abortion should be personal and made with a doctor, not regulated by the government. Yet, in 27 states, millions of Americans seeking healthcare will lose their constitutional right to an abortion– a right protected since 1973.

The radical conservative justices on the Supreme Court are dangerous to the human rights that were once respected in the United States and democracies worldwide.

As millions lose access to safe abortions, primarily disenfranchised BIPOC communities, other rights that are constitutionally protected are at risk. In a concurring opinion, Justice Thomas said the court should reconsider rulings protecting birth control, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

This is unacceptable.

Penn Dems encourages all of its members to take action in favor of the right to choose. We ask that our members donate to funds that help abortion providers who will soon be overwhelmed by demand from out of state, which also disproportionally affects marginalized Philadelphians.

In several states around the county, legislatures with Republican majorities are poised to outlaw abortion, with only the threat of a veto from Democratic governors standing in their way. Here in Pennsylvania, Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano wants to outlaw abortion without exceptions. We cannot allow this to happen. This November, we must elect Josh Shapiro, who has pledged to protect all Pennsylvanian’s right to an abortion.

Penn Dems condemn the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and future considerations to overturn human rights in the state of Pennsylvania and the United States.
