With Sanders out, Penn Dems and Penn for Biden move to unite young voters (April 15, 2020)

With former Vice President set to become the Democratic nominee for president, Penn Democrats and Penn for Biden are preparing to unite the party against Trump. Although not everyone in Penn Dems originally supported Biden, most members of the club believe it is important to unite the Democratic Party around one candidate. 

Penn Dems releases endorsements for the 2020 Pennsylvania Democratic primary (February 23, 2020)

On Tuesday, Penn Democrats announced their first round of congressional endorsements for the Pennsylvania Democratic primary on April 28. The group also endorsed incumbent Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Attorney General. 

Political Director Michael Nevett said the board chose candidates they feel are focused on fighting for better laws and representation for Pennsylvania. He also said that although most candidates are incumbents, none held elected federal office before 2016 and believes they are part of an exciting “new wave” of leadership in the House.

In Tuesday’s election, Penn student turnout increased five-fold from the last mayoral race (November 7, 2019)

Voter turnout on campus increased five-fold from 2015, the year of the last mayoral election, according to Penn Leads the Vote data released Wednesday. On Tuesday, at least 1,058 students voted for mayor and city council positions. In November 2015, only 213 students voted on election day.

Penn Democrats President and College junior EJ Carlson said Penn Dems encouraged voter turnout via a Facebook page, personal texts, and the group’s voter guide.

Meet Penn for Biden: the group backing the former vice president’s bid for the White House (August 22, 2019)

While the former Penn Dems president has now shifted his focus on supporting Biden, Penn Dems has not yet endorsed a presidential candidate.
Although the group is waiting to endorse a candidate, the Biden campaign has reached out to them, Penn Dems Communication Director and College sophomore Tamara Wurman said.

Phila. City Commissioner candidates propose making polls more accessible at Penn Dems forum (April 24, 2019)

The forum featured eight Democratic candidates: Marwan Kreidie, Luigi Borda, Kahlil Williams, Dennis Lee, Lisa Deeley, Moira Bohannon, Jennifer Devor, and Omar Sabir. Deeley is the incumbent City Commissioner and is in her first term. She is competing against the other 12 candidates for one of the two Democratic Commissioner seats. The event was moderated by Philadelphia Inquirer journalist Jonathan Lai and hosted by Penn Democrats.

 

Penn Dems won’t endorse a 2020 candidate yet — but some students aren’t waiting (April 24, 2019)

Penn Democrats President and College sophomore EJ Carlson said Dems has allowed the groups to advertise on the Dems Facebook page to garner more support.

“We are promoting these groups to members and letting them know when new groups for candidates are formed,” Carlson said. “As long as they’re members of Dems, they’re free to post about events for candidates in our Facebook page.”With
