First Community Outreach Event!
April 4, 2009 – 5:16 pm —
Hello Everybody,
My name is Nate Miller and I have the distinct honor of working with the newly-formed Community Outreach Committee. When we first met, we knew we wanted to make a difference in the West Philadelphia community, but didn’t necessarily know how to go about doing it. We were fortunate enough to be able to create a partnership with the Sayre Beacon Program, and have started a unique community service project. We give presentations to middle school-aged students about civics, hopefully giving these people the tools to become more active citizens. Our first presentation was very much an introductory one, dealing with our country’s early history. I think we did a wonderful job of making it as interactive as humanly possible, giving the kids an opportunity to decide the dialogue. Thankfully, they also enjoyed our Jeopardy game! These kids were on the ball, and were extremely competitive. I couldn’t encourage it explicitly, but I loved the smack-talking going around the room! We hope to get into some more interesting things in future weeks. That’s all for now, folks!
Nate
