New RNC Chair Elected

Last week, the Republican National Committee elected its new chair. Sarah Palin? Not quite, although she did recently launch her new PAC.

The RNC elected Michael Steele, former Maryland Lt. Governor and U.S. Senate candidate in 2006.
While many pundits note that Michael Steele is an African American, in my opinion the ethnicity of Steele is far less relevant than the direction in which he will take the Republican party, which is in desperate need of a new strategy, having suffered astounding defeats in the last two national elections. That being said, his status as the first African American RNC Chair may put him in a unique position to bring some change to the GOP’s public image.
(It would be much harder for some of the other candidates for RNC Chair — such as Katon Dawson, who opposed 1960’s busing policies, and Chip Saltsman, who mailed a CD with the song “Barack the Magic Negro” to all RNC committee members, to bring the new breed of politics that America is demanding).
As I write this post, I find myself asking, “Do I want Republicans to adapt to the changing environment?” And I think the answer is yes. Although I am a Democrat and support Democratic policies, I think that it’s a good thing that Republicans are making progress — our country will be stronger for it.
