Careers in Public Policy and Government Panel

Looking for a way to make a difference in the lives of Americans and your community? You can play a vital role in addressing pressing issues through a career in government and policy. Job and internship opportunities are available in local, state, and federal government as well as in political organizations, nonprofits, and private sector companies, in Washington DC and beyond. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet and hear from three Penn alumni who have taken interesting career paths within the policy field. They will describe how they got their start, share highlights of their work, and offer practical advice for your job and internship search. Panelists will include:

Diplomat in Residence, Robert Dry, will speak about careers and internships in the State Department including Foreign Service opportunities in officer management, consular, economics, political, and public diplomacy. Internships are offered in DC offices as well as many posts overseas. Mr. Dry is a Senior Foreign Service Officer who spent the better part of three decades representing the United States in the Middle East, East and Southeast Asia, and Europe. Although an Economic Officer by career track, he is a specialist in Science Diplomacy, having served recently as Counselor for Environment, Science, Technology and Health/Non-Proliferation Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Paris. During and following 9/11/2001, Mr. Dry served as ‘acting ambassador (Long-term Charge d’Affaires) at the U.S. Embassy in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, when he obtained access to Oman for U.S. forces to stage the war in Afghanistan (’Operation Enduring Freedom’). Mr. Dry also served Ambassador Pete Peterson as a negotiator to conclude the final normalization of relations between the U.S. and Vietnam. Since fall 2008, Mr. Dry has served as the State Department’s diplomat in residence at City College of New York where he also teaches international relations and U.S. Foreign policy.
